We recognise the original Custodians of Country, their ongoing connection to the land, sky, seas, cultures and communities - paying our respects to Elders, past and present.
Some lessons can’t be taught in a studio – they have to be experienced with community on Country. These snippets from last week’s Architecture, Design and Planning – University of Sydney studio trip, led by Marni Reti and David Kaunitz, barely begin to capture the energy and vibrancy of the experience.
hashtag#BaakaCulturalCentre came alive with Barkindji culture as rich local practices were shared through art, performance and language. Combined with walks on Country, a cook-up by the Baaka, and storytelling under the stars, the pride and generosity of the community was deeply felt.
Other highlights included visiting Merrima’s much-admired Wilcannia Health Service and exploring the treasure trove of heritage buildings throughout the town. On a more sobering note, the devastating man-made impacts on Country did not go unnoticed, including the pollution of the Baaka and the legacy of widespread deforestation around Broken Hill.
The exchange of insights across many perspectives – encompassing Elders, community leaders and young people, alongside colleagues David Kaunitz and Marni Reti, and interdisciplinary practitioners including local architect Anthony Pierce, as well as Joshua Zoeller, Shelley Indyk, Evy Anwar and Tom Hearn, together with the engaged cohort of Master of Architecture students – made for a week full of reflection and learning.
While I would have cherished the opportunity to participate in a design studio like this during my own studies, I feel privileged to have been part of this trip and look forward to seeing what the students come up with. Many thanks to all those that made this possible Kaunitz Yeung Architecture Acoustic Logic Mirvac Jasmax Guida Moseley Brown Architects University of Sydney
