Day 2 Recap: Engaging with hashtagBarkandji Country

Starting the day bright and early at 7 am, our journey covered the final 250km from hashtagCobar to hashtagWilcannia. Fueling up at the fantastic Wilcannia Cafe managed by the community, we then proceeded to the new hashtagBaakaCulturalCentre, freshly completed and awaiting a cultural exhibition installation before its grand opening. The students actively participated in unpacking and arranging furniture for the center.

Later in the day, in a convoy alongside the hashtagBarkandji rangers, we ventured to hashtagParoo National Park to walk country and visit significant cultural sites. Including the ancient petroglyphs at Lake Peery, illustrating centuries of Barkandji heritage along the Baaka (Darling River). These carvings depict emu feet, boomerangs, and the symbolic footprint of a cleverman.

Wrapped up the day, with a cookup at our riverside accommodation by the Baaka.

Accompanied by Marni Reti, Evy Anwar, Ka Wai Yeung, along with our children, we embarked westward with 16 Architectural Masters Students from Architecture, Design and Planning – University of Sydney. This trip forms part of a semester-long design studio based in hashtagWilcannia, offering us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich hospitality, culture, and community of Wilcannia.

A special shoutout to Dr Michael Mossman, Dr. Deborah Barnstone, Dr. dagmar reinhardt, and the entire University of Sydney team for their invaluable support in making this unconventional studio experience possible.
