Eastern Suburbs House

A discreet luxury extension to a grand federation house.

THE BRIEF
To restore the existing federation home and add a contemporary luxury living and bedroom rear extension.

DESIGN APPROACH
A sensitive and striking fusion of the old and new this project lovingly restores a heritage bungalow adjacent to centennial park in Sydney and adds a beautiful and efficient jewellery box as a rear extension. This jewellery box plays on the axis of the central corridor of the old house using it to define the living spaces and the upstairs arrangement. The extension brings the best of modern living with luxurious bathrooms, three additional bedrooms and a generous open plan living, dining and kitchen space. From the living space the room opens out to the backyard via a timber window seat and timber sliding doors. The kitchen / dining space spills out to a steel pergola in the backyard. These subtle variations and balance of materials creates a rich and sophisticated space.

INTERESTING FACT
The staircase uses a hidden beam to enable the treads to seemingly float above the living space.
