Solomon Islands Libraries

As part of a Solomon Islands Government literacy program, Kaunitz Yeung Architecture design a standard school library building which could be replicated across the Solomon Islands.

THE BRIEF
To design a suite of standard school library that is culturally appropriate, easy to build locally, able to be replicated, imbued with local vernacular and reflected best practice.

THE DESIGN APPROACH
The approach was to articulate the bookshelf forms into the elevation of the buildings and integrate art that would inspire reading. The integration of the bookshelves enabled the building to take on a multi-purpose function.

INTERESTING FACT
The initial project resulted in 17 libraries built in school around Honiara.
